Primary Intent

Science has changed our lives and how we interact with the world in which we live. The aim of our Science Curriculum is to provide all Ark Globe Primary students with the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Ark Globe Primary’s Science Curriculum is rich in key foundational knowledge and concepts, students are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. Throughout Key stages 1 and 2 they will learn to use Science to explain what is occurring around them, predict how things might behave and analyse the cause.

Our Science curriculum ensures that the foundational building blocks in biology, chemistry and physics are developed in Key stages 1 and 2. It is vitally important that all students develop a secure understanding of each block of knowledge to progress to the next stage. Some of the units follow directly on from others, building on students’ prior knowledge and understanding (such as the chemistry strand, which starts with common materials in Ks1 and builds up to changing states of matter in upper Ks2). Other Units are not directly linked to previous learning, such as many of the Units within the physics strand of Science. These have been sequenced so that a student’s breadth of knowledge is built upon year after year.

Science is taught twice a week in Years 1-6. Every lesson has a key question that is answered during the lesson. Our students are taught to answer these key questions using our Scientific disciplinary skills (working scientifically skills).

Disciplinary Skills of Science

  • Questioning
  • Observing over time, pattern seeking
  • Testing (comparative and fair testing)
  • Classification
  • Drawing conclusions and evaluation
  • Evidence based learning

These disciplinary skills are taught within the content of biology, chemistry and physics, and focus on the key features of scientific enquiry, so that our students learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions.

In addition to this, Science also encouraged students to develop life skills such as

  • Curiosity
  • Confidence
  • Critical thinking
  • Motivation
  • Creativity

Secondary Intent

Our Science curriculum prepares our students for university and to be leaders in their community by:

  1. Exposing students to STEM careers and the fundamental science underpinning the world around them.
  2.  Allowing students to form their own ideas and and then test them scientifically.
  3. Questioning, testing, interpreting evidence and communicating key scientific concepts.

So that students make decisions based on evidence and lead the scientific discoveries of tomorrow.

“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.” — Rosalind Franklin
