Student Leadership

Every pupil has a say in how our school is run.

Primary Student Leadership
Secondary Student Leadership

Overview

We are passionate about providing our students with the skills they need to become leaders in their community. Our Student Leadership programme creates a wide range of opportunities for students to take responsibility.

Primary Student Leadership

Junior Leadership Team

At Ark Globe Academy we teach our students about how society is organised and governed. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through the Junior Leadership Team (JLT). The members of the JLT are elected through a secret ballot after candidates has shared their ‘manifestos’ with their peers. The JLT meets regularly to discuss school issues and to encourage students to present their points of view to make changes throughout the school. All students learn about their rights and responsibilities and learn to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse multicultural society.

Class Leaders

Two students (one girl, one boy) are chosen each half term to be Class Leaders. Their role is to welcome all visitors to the classroom by greeting them at the door and articulating what they are currently learning about in class. This is an opportunity for our students to demonstrate professionalism and leadership, skills that will support them in future careers.

Secondary Student Leadership

Head Boy and Head Girl

Our Head Boy and Head Girl, alongside the Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl, undergo a rigorous application process to represent the students in our school. All students complete an application, deliver speeches to the whole school and are interviewed by our Executive Principal. In post, students meet with Mr. Jones regularly to discuss student life in the school and develop their leadership skills. Our Head Students represent the academy at internal and external events and support our student body.

Student Union

The Student Union (SU) is made up of students in our Sixth Form and include a President, Vice President, Communications Officer, Wellbeing Officer and more. The SU undergo an application process where they deliver speeches to Year 11 and the Sixth Form before a vote takes place. They represent the interests of and support students in the Sixth Form and represent the academy at internal and external events.

Prefects

Our Prefect process begins in Year 10 when students apply to be a Prefect in Year 11. Prefects complete an application form and support the Academy by being leaders across the school. Prefects support the leadership of the school by helping other students, through wellbeing support, being corridor monitors, supporting in the Commons or with revision strategies, for example. Prefects show a high level of independence in their work and build fantastic relationships

Peer Mentors

We began the Peer Mentor programme in 2022 and trained 15 Peer Mentors who meet with their mentees weekly to discuss Learning Habits, Attendance and other priorities using scenario-based learning. We now have over 60 trained Peer Mentors who meet weekly and who wear their badge with pride!

Student Council

Our Student Council this year will launch in November with 5 representatives from each year group (Year 7 – Year 10). Student Council members will meet with the Senior Leadership Team and the Head Students to share student voice and contribute to student life at the Academy.

Sports Leaders

We have a number of Sports Leaders at Ark Globe Academy who represent the Academy in local and national competitions, including the National Youth Athletics Competition last year, where we came 2nd in the country! Our Sports Leaders represent the academy with pride and support their peers whilst developing their own interests and leadership capacities.

Fulham Football Club Leadership Programme

Some students in Year 8 and Year 9 take part in the Fulham Football Club Leadership Programme where they work with professionals from Fulham Football Club on a range of skills to develop their Growth Mindset. The programme lasts for 2 terms and culminates in a social action project that students work on collaboratively. Students are awarded the Achieve Qualification at the end of the programme and attend an event at Fulham Football Club.

Peer Readers

We have Peer Readers at Ark Globe who meet their younger mentees weekly to read with them. Our Peer Readers take great pride in their responsibility here to support our younger readers to be more independent and develop a growth mindset with reading. They share the importance of reading and help to foster a culture of reading for pleasure together.

Library Leaders

Our Library Leaders support Ms Parkes in the library and support their peers by ensuring that the library is a safe, welcoming and purposeful environment. They take pride in reading and the library space and support school initiatives such as World Book Day and reading for pleasure.

National Citizenship Service

Each year, we invite the NCS to Globe to offer students an outstanding leadership opportunity. In 2022, we had over 39 students sign up, which is the most in all Southwark schools. Students embark on a residential to develop their leadership skills and then implements a Social Action Project. This is an invaluable experience for students, not only for their CV or their college/UCAS applications, but in their development as young leaders.

Debate Mate

Each year, students from Ark Globe Academy participate in Debate Mate, a national debating competition which helps students develop their leadership skills, namely public speaking, growth mindset and independence. Last year, we got to the regional stage of the competition with our students doing Ark Globe proud.

School Representatives

120 students were involved in our Open Morning and Open Evening events this year, showing around prospective families and representing our Academy.

This year, two of our students will be representing Globe at the Evening in Celebration of Black History Month in Peckham alongside the Mayor of Southwark where they will be involved with the Q&A afterwards.
