In a rare and insightful event, Sir Richard Moore, Chief of MI6, attended a career panel discussion at Ark Globe Academy, where students had the chance to learn about the secret world of intelligence on Tuesday 4 June 2024.  He was joined by five MI6 agents whose identities were shielded for security reasons. The panel presented diverse expertise from intelligence, operations, and language specialisations.

Speaking under the veil of anonymity, the agents shared experiences from their intriguing careers, albeit with necessary discretion regarding locations and specific details. Their international assignments and the dynamic nature of their roles were highlighted, underscoring the global reach and impact of MI6's work.

Security was paramount, with two MI6 security members in attendance, ensuring the safety and confidentiality of the proceedings. The discussion kicked off with an introduction to the panellists' roles, followed by an interactive Q&A session with the students.

Sir Richard Moore demystified MI6's work, emphasising that it extends beyond the archetypal 'spy' role. He articulated the agency's need for a broad spectrum of talents, including linguists, scientists, lawyers, and individuals with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

The student engagement was remarkable, with probing questions about motivations for joining MI6, the nature of scientific roles within the agency, the emotional challenges of the job, the balance between field and office work, the reality versus the James Bond mythos, and opportunities for apprenticeships and recruitment.

This event enlightened the students about MI6's multifaceted operations and showcased the agency's commitment to nurturing the next generation of intelligence professionals.

Olivia, a Year 12 student, reflected, “What an absolute privilege to be a part of this event as not many people would be introduced to a career like the MI6. The secrecy was so suspenseful and cool.”

Another student, Sarima, remarked, “The event was very entertaining and informative, it really opened me up to new types of occupations I never thought possible.”

This event not only enlightened the students about MI6's multifaceted operations but also showcased the agency's commitment to nurturing the next generation of intelligence professionals.
