Construction Challenge

Tuesday 07 November 2017

A group of our Year 11 students participated in Southwark Construction Skills Centre’s Construction Challenge with students from 4 other Southwark schools. The task they had was to build a model house with a tiled roof and flooring.

On the first day, the teams were split into 4 groups and assigned to a mentor. Each team designed their company logo, created a business plan and reviewed the health and safety aspects of the project. The students were then given roles and responsibilities and ran through practical sessions to learn about the work they would be completing during the model house building challenge. On the second day, the teams were given two hours to complete various tasks, such as tiling, dry lining, bricklaying, roofing, plumbing, electrical work and kitchen installation to complete the model house.

Their model houses were assessed by 5 judges on the judging panel, who scored each team on their Health and Safety Policy, quality of work, team work, originality and sales pitch.

Students enjoyed their challenge very much, particularly the practical aspects such as electrical, brickwork and roof tiling. They received a certificate, a medal and a goodie bag with an award ceremony at the end of the challenge.

Through this challenge, students gained an insight into the construction industry and how buildings are made. They learnt about different types of work within the industry and had the chance to find out about jobs and training opportunities in construction.
